

Our staff members serve as both Cabin Counselors and Activity Instructors. Two counselors live together in a cabin with eight campers who are in the same grade in school. Cabin Counselors are responsible for getting their campers ready for the day, and are there to greet them in the evening after the day's activities are over.

AerobicsDescription: We have one position available for aerobics instructor. One aerobics class is offered each day since we use the gymnasium for other activities during the remainder of the activity periods. Aerobics is only available to our older campers. Instructors in this area must be able to teach another activity. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must have the ability to choreograph steps and teach them accordingly. Getting girls going in the morning must be seen as a fun challenge for you! You'll need lots of energy early in the day to keep the girls motivated and on the move! ArcheryDescription: We have one position available for an Archery instructor. Archery is offered usually 3 to 4 activity periods a day. We have 4 moveable targets and a covered shelter at our archery range. All ages of girls are allowed to sign up for archery. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You will be responsible for organizing and administering a safe, meaningful, and fun archery program geared to the ages, interests and abilities of the campers. You will also be responsible for care the equipment. Being creative is a necessity! You will be following the guidelines set forth by the National Archery Association and certifications are necessary for interested archery counselors. Arts and CraftsDescription: We have three positions available for Arts and Crafts instructors. Keystone Campers love Arts and Crafts so it runs during all 7 of our activity periods. The program is provided to promote skill levels, imagination, creativity, and fun! Applicant must have creativity, patience and flexibility. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. As part of the Arts and Crafts staff, you will work alongside our Art Director. You will be working in both group and one-on-one instruction settings with campers. You should have a background in some of the following areas: painting, pottery, lanyards, weaving, tie-dye, candle making, paper mache, drawing, knitting, etc... BadmintonDescription: We have one position available for Badminton Instruction. Depending on the interest in badminton, this activity is usually offered 5 to 6 activity periods during the day. Campers really enjoy this fun and energetic sport. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. Having knowledge in the rules of Badminton is a must. You should also have the ability to break down specific badminton skills and communicate them easily to children. Creativity is a necessity when planning daily lessons! Camping / HikingDescription: We have two positions available for Camp/Hiking instructors, which is part of our Adventure Program. In Camp/Hiking, campers will learn first aid, emergency procedures, Leave No Trace ethics, various knots, fire-building, campfire cooking techniques, and tent pitching, to name a few! Classes are generally small and offered 2 to 3 activity periods a day. Campers in this activity are usually interested in exploring Pisgah National Forest, which is a short trip from camp. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must have an interest, knowledge and skills in hiking and camping and the ability to teach and enthuse others. Along with planning fun, interesting daily lessons, you will also work in conjunction with the Adventure Staff Director to plan off-camp trips. Trips can be day hikes, half-day adventures to water falls, overnights to sleep under the stars, and even 3 day treks across ridgelines. There are lots of possibilities for fun and adventure with the beautiful Pisgah National Forest at our backdoor! CanoeingDescription: We have two or three positions available for canoe instructors, which is part of our Adventure Program. Canoeing is offered for 5 out of our 7 activity periods. The canoe lake is located on the top of our property in a nice, secluded section. Campers love paddling around the lake, learning new skills, and having a great time on the water. Many campers also look forward to off-camp trips that are taken down two local rivers. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must have an interest, knowledge and skills in lake and river canoeing. You will need to possess current certification for Advanced Life Savings or a Water Safety Instructor from the American Red Cross. You will plan, in conjunction with the Adventure Staff Director, a series of river trips for each session, according to the abilities of the campers. Trips can include half or full day water adventures or even an over night canoeing trip down a river or Lake Jocassee. |
DanceDescription: We have one position available for a dance instructor. Dance classes are taught most periods of the day to a variety of age children in each class. Instructors are responsible for choreographing dance and teaching steps to class groups. At the end of each session, dance classes present a performance for the camp. As the dance instructor, you are responsible for putting together this show. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must be knowledgeable about many different dancing styles. Having the ability to choreograph steps and break down routines is necessary. You must also have patience to communicate movements to children. Creativity is a must! DramaDescription: We have one or two positions available for instructing drama classes to all ages of campers. Drama classes are held in our Pavilion, which is complete with a stage and costume room. The campers learn a variety of plays during the session. Under the instructor's guidance, some campers will be writing and directing their own plays. In other cases, the instructor will be directing the plays. Each drama class puts on a performance for the camp at the end of each session. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must have an ability to instruct on a variety of topics such as improvisation, stage performance, makeup, voice projection, pantomimes, scenery, and costumes. Patience and creativity are a must. GolfDescription: We have one position available for a golf instructor. Keystone Camp is two par three holes on the top of the property. Golf meets for either 1 or 2 periods a day. Golf is becoming increasingly popular among our campers. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must have an interest, knowledge, and skills in the game of golf. Off-camp trips are also a possibility. You have the flexibility to plan trips to nearby driving ranges, putt-putt courses, or golf courses. Being creative and enthusiastic is always a must! GymnasticsDescription: We have one position available for a gymnastics instructor. At Keystone Camp, campers have the possibility of working on three different pieces of gymnastic equipment: uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor mats. As a class and under the guidance of the gymnastics instructor, the campers will choreograph a final performance to present to the camp at the end of the session. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must have an interest, knowledge, and skills in gymnastics. You will be working with a variety of aged children, all at different levels, from beginners to true gymnasts. Creativity in creating interesting daily lessons is important! Horseback Riding (English)Description: There are 3 or 4 positions for Horseback Riding Instructors at Keystone. Our campers' riding experience ranges from no experience to advanced. We teach English riding in several different riding rings, and also utilize over 6 miles of trails on the camp property. We have a cross-country course as well for our upper level riders. Horsemanship classes are taught in addition to riding classes. These classes focus on stable management, grooming, first aide, etc. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. Must have at least 5 years of formal Hunt Seat instruction within 3 years of applying. We prefer that you will have had some Hunt Seat show ring experience. In this position, you will be working directly under the Barn Director, Gay Schudlt, who has been working at Keystone Camp for the past 16 summers. Horseback Riding instructors may or may not serve as cabin counselors since extra duties are required of these instructors in the mornings and late afternoons. You must be disciplined, friendly, out-going, and love both horses and children! NatureDescription: We have one position available for a Nature Instructor. Nature classes are offered 3 or 4 activity periods a day. During those periods, campers love to explore camp, identify trees, creek stomp in our creek bed, and pick blackberries. Exploration and discovery are what makes Nature so much fun for our campers. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You should have an interest and knowledge of nature and ecology with the ability to teach and enthuse others. You will help the campers learn and identify local plants, trees, bugs, and animals. You will also lead campers in understanding ecological awareness and conservation. The nature classes are also responsible for maintaining the camp nature trail. Being creative with lesson plans is important! |
RifleryDescription: We have one position available for a Riflery instructor. Riflery runs 4 to 5 activity periods during our 7 period day. Keystone Camp has a safe riflery range where campers can aim at 3 targets. Advancement of levels is important to some campers and irrelevant to others. If interested, campers can follow the guidelines outlines by the National Rifle Association. All safety rules in the Code of the Junior Rifleman must be memorized and exercised by the campers before being allowed to handle a rifle. Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. If you are interested in riflery, a certification course is available to expand your skills and knowledge. On application, please indicate that you are interested in this extra course. During riflery classes, you must be able to inform campers of the safety rules as outlined; instruct campers in proper shooting form and procedure; keep all guns clean and well-oiled; keep score cards on each camper according to NRA guidelines; make weekly level reports on campers; and make sure all rifles are sighted correctly and in good condition. Safety-consciousness is an absolute must! Rock ClimbingDescription: There are 3 or 4 positions available for Rock Climbing Instructors at Keystone, which is part of the Adventure Program. Rock Climbing is offered 6 or 7 activity periods a day and is one of our most popular activities among campers. Keystone Camp has a 32-foot wall with four panels, each gradually becoming more difficult and challenging for our climbers. At least once or twice a week, we head into Pisgah National Forest and climb a real rock face, which challenges our campers even more. It is an awesome experience for both campers and counselors alike! Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. All climbing instructors should be able to document experience as a climber in a variety of conditions and at a level higher than that being taught at Keystone. You should be able to demonstrate all of the climbing, teaching, and supervision skills necessary to safely conduct climbing activities OR be in the process of being trained and supervised by the Head of Climbing. You will assist campers in learning appropriate climbing skills and techniques including the following: proper use and adjustment of harnesses and helmets, knot tying, safety calls, wall climbing, and actual rock climbing. Instructors will be responsible for running classes at the climbing wall as well as leading a series of trips off the camp property to actual rock sites. Instructors are responsible for the proper use and care of all equipment. SwimmingDescription: There are two or three positions available for Swimming instructors. Swimming is offered about 4 periods during our day. Our swim lake is fairly centrally located on our property. We have a diving board, slide, and lots of fun noodles for the campers to use. Some campers take swimming to improve or practice the skills that they have learned. Other campers take the free swim class, where they can play on all the fun swim stuff we have. Sometimes the campers are a little hesitant about jumping into the swim lake, but with a little encouragement, they have a great time! Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must hold current certification of Advanced Life Saving or WSI from the American Red Cross. You be will maintaining the waterfront as a safe area and free of potential hazards. You will also be responsible for the upkeep of the waterfront equipment by making sure it is safe and in its correct place. This includes both lifesaving equipment and camp recreation equipment. At the swim lake, you should be able to enforce waterfront rules and account for campers during free swim as well as during scheduled classes. You will be teaching swimming and possibly life saving classes to campers and/or counselors according to the American Red Cross guidelines. You will also accompany and assist other counselors on out-of-camp trips as a certified lifeguard and supervisor when the trip entails going into a water environment. Team SportsDescription: We have one or two positions available for Team Sports instructors at Keystone Camp. Team Sports is usually offered one or two periods a day, depending on the interest of the campers. A variety of sports is taught in this activity. We have seen lots of fun sports played around Keystone like soccer, basketball, water polo, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, flag football, softball, and cricket. Depending on your interest and ability in certain sports, the campers love to learn anything that you are enthusiastic about! Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You must have a knowledge, interest, and ability to teach a variety of team sports. You will need to have knowledge (more or less) of the rules and regulations of the following sports: soccer, basketball, softball, and volleyball. Additional sports may include cricket, rugby, and other sports involving team dynamics. TennisDescription: We have three positions available for Tennis Instructors. Tennis is offered 5 or 6 activity periods during our day. Keystone Camp has 5 newly resurfaced tennis courts in a very central location on camp property. Most campers choose to take tennis to better their skills and we hope that this is the goal of the Tennis counselors as well! Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have finished one year of college. You should have an interest, knowledge, and be skillful in tennis with the ability to teach and enthuse others. You will be organizing and administering a safe and meaningful program geared to the ages, interests and abilities of the campers. Different daily activities and new ideas are necessary when teaching tennis to spice up things on the courts! |
